There is something special about the first proper motorhome trip of the year. After a long winter of grey skies, damp mornings and far too much checking weather apps, April finally brought a break in the clouds and the perfect excuse to head off for a few days in the Lake District.
This was one of those trips that reminded me exactly why motorhoming gets under your skin. No airport queues, no rushing, no strict itinerary — just a van, a few essentials, and the freedom to point it north and see where the road takes you.
We set off early on a crisp April morning, with the sort of sunshine that makes everything feel more promising. The roads were kind, the coffee tasted better than it should have done from a travel mug, and by the time we reached Cumbria, that familiar feeling had kicked in: shoulders drop, breathing slows, and the stress of normal life starts to disappear in the rear-view mirror.
The Lake District is one of those places that never really disappoints. It does not matter how many times you go — it always manages to give you a slightly different experience. On this trip, the hills were still holding onto a touch of winter, but the valleys were bursting into life. Lambs in the fields, walkers everywhere, pub gardens starting to fill up, and that lovely sense that the touring season is waking up again.
One of the great things about doing the Lakes by motorhome is that you are never far from a fantastic view. Even the simple things feel better there. A bacon sandwich with the side door open. A quiet brew before anyone else is awake. Sitting out for half an hour in the evening with a blanket over your knees and watching the light change over the fells. Those are the moments that stay with you.
We kept this trip fairly relaxed. No trying to cram too much in. A bit of walking, a bit of mooching round local villages, and more than enough eating. That is one of the joys of travelling this way — you do not have to turn every break into a military operation. Sometimes the best trips are the ones where you slow down and let the place do the work.
Of course, no UK motorhome trip is ever completely without character. We had the usual little moments — a slight battle with levelling on one pitch, a bit of indecision over whether coats were needed every time we stepped outside, and the constant British game of asking whether that cloud looks like rain or not. But that is all part of it. In a strange way, it would not feel like a proper motorhome trip without a bit of weather chat and at least one awkward reverse.
What stood out most on this April escape was how good it felt just to be back on the road again. Motorhoming does not have to be about huge adventures or long distances. Sometimes it is simply about changing your view for a few days, getting out into the fresh air, and remembering how good simple travel can be.
The Lake District delivered exactly that. Fresh air, stunning scenery, good food, and the sort of reset you do not realise you need until you have had it. If you are thinking about your first UK trip of the season, you could do a lot worse than pointing the van towards the Lakes and just going.
